It's always interesting to see how Hungary gets covered in major US or UK newspapers. Today the UK's Telegraph ran a feature on Budapest: "Hungary: Bathing is Best in Budapest". Click 'read more' for more
The Telegraph's feature story on Budapest makes mention of the Hungarian capital's "fin-de-sicle air" and advises strolling around the Castle District in the morning, having some traditional Hungarian pastries and going for a dip in the thermal waters - all good suggestions.
Apparently, our beloved city is still considered a bargain: "A bonus in these lean times is that it is cheap: a recent survey conducted by the Post Office found that of all the central and eastern European cities outside the Eurozone, Budapest represented the best value of all."
Overall, the piece is a good overview of visiting the city but what I found a bit ironic is that in the same article the author mentions having lunch at upper crusty eateries like the Gresham Palota or the Kempinski - two places which may be nice but are not exactly known as cheap venues in Budapest.
The Telegraph article kind of makes me think of what I believe is Budapest's bi-polar nature as a tourist destination: It tries to be a luxurious destination for some, but its strengths lie in just being its own funky and gritty self.
Stay tuned!
