I have never been to the Sziget, it would be the first time but so many people talked so much about it that I want to go there this year.

The festival has changed a lot from a muddy gathering to today's business enterprise but it still has something that attracts me. For example sitting at a buffet, talking with friends while missing the desired concerts I came for.

As my brother bought the week pass it would be great to join him for at least one day and see what all the fuss is about. For years I've thought about the pleasures of wallowing through mud and spending a few hours waiting to use a synthetic toilet in either boiling heat of a torrential downpour, but never found the energy to pull myself out of my stupor to make it to Sziget. Should I win, I promise to call back and report - not that I don't always tune in to the podcasts anyway.

I've lived in Budapest for 3 years and I've never gone! I really wanted to go see Gomez three years ago, but they got cancelled due to security problems at Heathrow, so that ended that. If I can't see Gomez, at least I can go see Adam Green.

    Hi
I'm from Gyál and I LOVE Sziget Festival. I have lots of good memories about the concerts and the funny and friendly tourists and local visitors. My best memory is the show of an Italian guy (Ennio Marchetto)who changed his paper clothes to music last year wich was incredible(check youtube http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=+%09Ennio+Marchetto&search_type=&aq=f) ! The tent was full but it was worth to fight for a place!
This year I would like to see the Sex Pistols because I'm afraid that they won't come anymore to Hungary and I don't wanna miss this chance to see that punks not dead:).
I hope that Sziget will be fun this year too and I save 8000 Ft to beer:D
I wish sunny weather to everyone maybe this year will be an exception

hi i'm david and i'm from budapest. the heart of the city.

best memories... let's see... last year's tool show (actually, it wasn't that huge, but i love them so much, and the fact that they came here was really awsome), tito&tarantula a few years back (hot blood everywhere!), und natürlich: die a:rtzte, (hallo mein schatz, ich liebe dich...), oh and we must not forget my highschool love-at-first-sight, whom i couldn't even kiss, but we spent a great day at the festival when i was 18... :)
and one more: there was a huge piece of visual art near the tilos tent maybe 3 years ago called octal, made by kiégõ izzók. i was also involved in the construction with some french people and of course my freinds. one of the most memorable festivals for me although it was the one where i visited the least concerts.

best things to do: just hanging around. visiting taichi lessons in the mornings (there are a lot of them, mostly pretty unenjoyable, but funny to see :)), drumming on wastecontainers, bathing in the danube, screaming the lyrics 'til you lose your voice.

and the ones i need to try out: mudbathing and connecting activites (wrestling and stuff), airguitar competition, boxing with surrealisticly huge gloves and headprotectors, standing on the stage and playing for people.

general advice: go for the smaller shows, smaller tents, where there are less people, but much better music and mood. people are very friendly at these places. ;)

    peace!
    dave

    Hi!

I'm Thomas from the country. The next will be my 13th Island Festival. Well. This name is strange to me. It was: Student Island, Pepsi Island, and now....
I think the music isn't the most important thing in this event. Rather the feeling: to walk from another concert place to the other with beer or wine in your hands; to meet your friends who you haven't seen a long time; to lay on the grass trying to sleep on afternoon.

I'm sorry to admit that I have lived in Budapest for 10 years and ha've never been to Sziget. But now I have good reason to go because of Jamiroquai. It seems that JK and the boys and close to calling it quits. I missed them the last time they were in Budapest 3 years ago and hope to finally see them live!

    hejj,

i'm from kunhegyes, and i'v been to Sziget 4 times until now. I always love to go to kispál, and másfél but one of the best concerts was placebo for me. if i won a ticket, i would drink some beer with my friends, and go to loads of concerts!:)

For me Sziget fesztival is special among the hungarian fesztivals due to the Jazz stage, and fortunately "big names" emerging on this stage is getting more ordinary. My best experience I've seen at the sziget was the concert of New Cool Collective from Netherlands, the tent was almost blown up:)
This Year I'm looking forward the gig of Seun Kuti, 'cause Im a fan of afrobeat and of course Fela Kuti.

    Hey

I live in Edinburgh (Scotland) now, but my home town is Budapest. I love going to the Sziget because I can always meet long lost friends there and because the atmosphere is so incredibly chilled out and friendly and there are always lots to do even during the day.

I like the drawing tent (run by one of the churches I think) and table tennis, I go to some of the lectures sometimes and I can go to the rabbi for advice or compete for turorudi :) I got married there once (blush), but not for long.

My favourite gig was Sonic Youth in 1996 I think, Yonderboi, Hadag Nachas and Franz Ferdinand are close seconds. I love the fact that there are hundreds of bands from all over Europe and beyond.

    See you there

    H x

    hello everybody,

I'm from Bucharest not from Budapest, I'm telling this because often, especially the people from U.S. are confusing these 2 cities but in my opinion Budapest has nothing to do with Bucharest, it's 1000 times better than my city:) Last time when it's been confused was last saturday during Lenny Kravit's concert, he said: "We need Hungaria for Love Revolution" :)) so laim...Anyway, I wanna tell you that I was last year for the first time to Sziget and I absolutly loved it, no bullshit, I had a great time all week, I've met a lot of people from a lot of countries, listened good music and the best part was the mud :) what a lovely bath in mud I had with a nice girl :) For me Sziget festival became a special place, can't wait to come back in 2 weeks.

    Good morning everybody!
I have no doubt, The sziget Fest will be excellent in 2008 as well. Naturaly I will spend about 3 days on the Island of Obuda from 13th of aug. Unfortunately I was just in 2007 on this lovely Festival thanks to my busy work and boss :(
The Manu Chao, Pink, my favorite group Quimby were great on the Main Stage. But as I saw the food and drink were expensive a bit.
Otherwise I am waiting for the 13th of aug and I hope I can Win a Day-ticket...

    Haho,

Im from Szazhalomatta a lovely city 20km from Bp. First and foremost I am a Sziget-aholic :)) as a constant vistitor since 1994.
Needless to say in 1994 the name of this festival was 'EUROWOODSTOCK' due to the 25th anniversary of Fest of Woodstock. Moreover there were 2 main stage instead of the today's 1.
Briefly I saw The Ten years after, The Stranglers, Jeff Haley (respect), Dawid Bowie, Stone Roses and last but not least The Madness that was my last experience last year on the main stage.
It is difficult to summarize ' Why I Like the sziget'
Honestly and all in all it already has became a lifestyle from 15 years...

see you this year as well!
    bye

    Hi,
My name is Erica. I live in the capital city, Budapest. Telling about only one good memory of Sziget is so difficult task, because this multicultural Festival gives several pleasant moments to the visitors.
When I searched my mind for nice memories of Sziget, at first the concert of Apocalyptica occured to me. In a 72 degrees centigrade tent the huge multinational public sang a famous song (Metallica - Nothing else matters) and the Finnish cello-metal band played the music for us.
It was a very hot and wonderful moment. :)
I hope Sziget will enrich me with similar memories again in 2008.
  19. Laca — 22, July 2008 @ 16:35
    hello,

Im from Budapest, ops, what a surprise...
I have thousands of good memories from Sziget festivals (and Diáksziget too) but one of the best is Marina from Belarus. We became friends after a rainy night when we started to discuss our musical taste and this conversation is still on going from year to year exchanging music and millions of words.

I hope she comes this year again.

    Laca
