Picture Perfect

Hungarians' affinity for photography goes back to the very inception of film art - Magyar inventor József Petzvál created the objective lens that revolutionized camera technology in the 1840s. Click 'read more' for more.

This month, Where magazine describes several temporary exhibitions in Budapest that offer a panoramic view of significant celluloid heroes and history.

JUNE 6-AUGUST 24
SOUL AND BODY: PHOTOGRAPHY'S GREATEST HUNGARIAN MASTERS
During Hungary's tumultuous era between the World Wars, photography arts blossomed with groundbreaking works by such Magyar visionaries as André Kertész, László Moholy-Nagy, and Robert Capa. Featuring plentiful inimitable images by these artists and many more from the early 20th century to today, this exhibit enlightens viewers at Budapest's Museum of Fine Arts (Pest XIV, Heroes' Square); see Szepmuveszeti.hu for details.

JUNE 19-SEPTEMBER 14
BRACO DIMITRIJEVIC RETROSPECTIVE
Since first earning international acclaim in the 1970s with his 'Casual Passer-By' series (portraying huge photos of ordinary people in prominent public spaces), Sarajevo-born French artist Braco Dimitrijevic continues opening eyes with other photography and installations that challenge contemporary social norms. Check out this optical artist's ouevre at the Ludwig Museum (Pest IX, Komor Marcell u. 1); log onto Lumu.hu to learn more.

UNTIL JUNE 27
SZABOLCS BARAKONYI: TÉBÁNYA
Capturing the plight of a depopulated Hungarian mining town where the mines closed down a decade ago, this series by modern Magyar photographer Szabolcs Barakonyi portrays the idle youth still living there with scant hopes for a successful future. Witness these touching visions of capitalism's casualties at the Dorottya Gallery (Pest V, Dorottya u. 8); view Mucsarnok.hu for specifics.

Be sure to pick up your very own hardcopy of Budapest'S WHERE Magazine at most hotels in Budapest.
