A scantily clad woman stands in front of an eerily cold white wall. Blood appears to be spattered above her head. She begins moving, twisting and turning. When faced away from the audience she is close to the floor and thrashes her body up against the wall.
Other figures creep out from the white crevasses of the performance space to join her; one male, dressed only in a kilt, dances a jig of sorts. While the whole scene is mildly disturbing, it is when the room takes on a blue cast when a naked, seemingly scarred man begins his twisting and writhing movements on the chilly floor that things turn super weird. After he curls up into a fetal ball, he is joined and gets entangled with a naked woman suspended by her feet from high above.
Sound like one of your most recent nightmares? Not to worry, it's just 'Tricks&Tracks', a dance performance by the Pál Frenák Dance Company, one of the movers and shakers of the modern dance movement in Hungary.
Budacast spoke to choreographer Pál Frenák about what inspires the incredibly emotive movements in his various dance productions. One source may be his family background: he grew up communicating in sign language with his parents, both of whom were deaf.
